I like to pull back as far as I can and show what is going on around the photo. It lets you know it's real. By showing what is going on around a photo, I feel someone viewing the photo can see why I have decided to capture that moment on film.
Take this for example, when you see a person smile you want to see what has caused them to do so. That is what I want to show; not so much the center focus, but WHY a perticular moment is important.
